"Hot Pursuit" was a mildly funny ride
Hot Pursuit is the latest film to star a dynamic duo of two female stars. Reese Witherspoon plays a tense cop who goes by the name Cooper and has the likes and respect of Barney Fife from The Andy Griffith Show. But she is not respected by her fellow police officers because of a taser mishap that happened with her and the mayor's son.
She finally gets a chance to prove herself when her captain asks her to protect Daniella Rivas (played by Sofia Vergara), a witness to the crimes committed by a dangerous drug cartel. Her testimony could put the cartel's leader away in prison for good. But things take an unexpected turn when Cooper arrives at Rivas' house and both her partner and Rivas husband are gunned down. They soon find themselves running away from the cartel and crooked cops, and to their surprise become the main suspects in the deadly shooting.
So the main question you're probably asking is, "We're these two funny together?" The answer is yes. I felt there was good comedic chemistry between the women. However, the jokes are your typical slapstick ones that had most people not laughing throughout the film. That's not to say it didn't have it's moments, because it did. Vergara's over-the-top accent makes parts of the film really funny. And a scene that shows Reese Witherspoon dressed as a boy is also hilarious. My favorite scene is when the two women are cursing at each other in Spanish on a bus filled with old people.
Overall, the film was predictable, but if you're in the mood for an easy and care-free film not expecting too many laughs, but some lighter moments, then this is a good film for you. I was entertained for the most part by it, but I feel there could have been funnier moments throughout. Witherspoon and Vergara did their best to make it happen, but it lacked in its writing and direction to make a great comedy that we will remember. So with that being said, I will rate this one a C-.
Hot Pursuit is rated P-G 13 and will be released nationwide this Friday, May 8. In case you haven't seen it, check out the trailer below.
