REVIEW: 'Tomorrowland' would be better left in the past
If you've ever been to Disneyland, then you know the magic
and excitement that Tomorrowland possesses. So you could imagine my excitement
when I heard they were making a movie based on it. I, like many, has such high
hopes for this film, but sad to say that hope was crushed halfway into watching
it.
The film focuses on Casey Newton (played by Britt
Robertson), a teenage girl, who finds a pin that shows her the future world of
Tomorrowland each time she touches it. She is met by a robot who looks like a
young girl named Athena. Together, they venture off to find an inventor named
Frank (played by George Clooney), who met and fell in love Athena when he was a
little boy after he took a trip to Tomorrowland before he was thrown out.
All
three of them then try to get to Tomorrowland, but their quest becomes difficult, because
they are being hunted by androids disguised as humans. When they finally make
it to Tomorrowland, Casey realizes the REAL reason why she’s there and has to
make some tough decisions to save the future.
First of all, Tomorrowland had all the makings to create an
epic film. Good actors… check! Britt Robertson is adorable and very likeable as
Casey. A young audience will be able to relate to her. She did an amazing job
in her role. George Clooney seems to be crass when Casey meets him, but you soon
realize he is anything but, and you learn why he is the way he is.
The young
and talented Raffey Cassidy is nothing but a natural in her role as Athena. She
reminded me of Lindsay Lohan in her dual roles in The Parent Trap. She was so
good!
Next on the list, cool visual effects…check! The film's futuristic look has the viewers wanting to
explore it for themselves.
Lastly, storyline and plot…FAIL! Most of the action you see
in the trailer to the film, is all the action you pretty much get. Also, its
mysterious plot seems to get super complicated, making the viewer lose interest
and ask themselves, 'What is this film even about?’ And, the amount of
time you think will be spent in Tomorrowland is mostly spent in the present in
its two-hour running time. Most of the film is pretty much drawn out by
pointless dialogue. SIDE NOTE: Two people next to me FELL ASLEEP, because the
film was moving so slowly. By the end of the film, I felt all the excitement I
had going in had been lost in space, and I wanted the time I spent
watching it back. So with all that being said, I advise you to skip a
trip to Tomorrowland and wait to rent it when its released on video.
